U.S. surfer dies in Mexican shark attack

IXTAPA, Mexico, April 30 (UPI) -- A gray shark weighing up to 700 pounds is being blamed by authorities for killing a 25-year-old surfer from San Francisco off the coast of Mexico.

Adrian Ruiz was attacked Monday afternoon while surfing about 300 yards offshore at Troncones Beach near Ixtapa, Mexico, KGO-TV in San Francisco reported Tuesday. He suffered a 15-inch wound in his right thigh and a friend, Brant Helms, brought him to shore but he died of massive blood loss by the time he reached a hospital, the station reported.

Ruiz was a bartender and globe-trotting surfer and had just arrived in Mexico the day before, the TV station reported.

"He loved to surf. He died doing something that he loved," another friend, Eric Griffin, told KGO-TV.

It was the second fatal shark attack in the Pacific Ocean in the past few days. A 66-year-old man was killed Friday when attacked by a great white shark off the San Diego coast. There also have been at least three non-fatal shark attacks along Florida beaches in the Atlantic Ocean in recent days.
