BAGHDAD, April 30 (UPI) -- The trial for former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, Ali Hassan "Chemical Ali" al-Majid and others in the deaths of 42 merchants has been postponed.
Judge Rauf Rasheed Abdel Rahman adjourned the trial of the eight defendants from Saddam Hussein's regime until May 20, Iraqi television network al-Sumaria reported Wednesday.
While court was in session Tuesday Rahman appointed attorneys for defendants without legal representation and discussed matters in one-on-one meetings with lawyers already retained.
Aziz, Majid and the others are on trial in the execution of 42 merchants accused of raising food prices when Iraq was under international sanctions.
Commenting on his father's trial, Aziz's son Ziad told al-Sumaria his father was innocent and being tried for political purposes.
