CARDIFF, Wales, April 29 (UPI) -- An Anglican bishop in Wales and his female chaplain resigned Tuesday after weeks of speculation about their relationship.
Both the Right Rev. Carl Cooper, bishop of St. David's, and the Rev. Mandy Williams-Potter announced earlier this year that they were separating from their spouses, he in February and she in March.
Williams-Potter, who served as Cooper's chaplain and communications officer for the diocese, refused to give any reason for her resignation, the South Wales Evening Post reported. The Church in Wales confirmed her resignation, also without comment.
Earlier, the church issued a brief statement on Cooper's resignation: "The Bishop of St. David's, the Right Rev. Carl Cooper, has resigned. He has apologized for any of his actions that have caused offense and made it impossible for him to continue his ministry as Bishop of St. David's."
Some priests in Wales had been seeking a tribunal to investigate Cooper's alleged misconduct.
The Welsh province of the Anglican communion is a small one with only six dioceses. Cooper was, unusually, a Welsh speaker, although he was English-born.
