Sweden drums out former military commander

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 29 (UPI) -- Sweden has formally dismissed its one-time top military commander for spousal abuse and mishandling classified documents.

Maj. Gen. Tony Stigsson was dismissed Monday after serving three months in jail for abusing his wife.

The Swedish news agency TT said Stigsson didn't go down without a fight. He fought his dismissal on the grounds that military personnel are not kicked out of the service over off-duty offenses.

But the National Disciplinary Offences Board wrote in its order that the general had shown gross disregard for his obligations and had lost the public's confidence.

Stigsson is still awaiting litigation of negligence charges stemming from the discovery in 2005 of classified documents at his home and in a storage area at another apartment. The general said the material was low-level and was stored in a secure manner.
