SHEFFIELD, New Brunswick, April 29 (UPI) -- Forecasters warned the Canadian province of New Brunswick that greater than expected rainfall will worsen spring thaw flooding.
At least 100 people have voluntarily evacuated their homes along the St. John River near the communities of Maugerville and Sheffield, where the main roads are already under water, the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday.
Heavy winter snowfall is behind the spring melt flooding, and Environment Canada warned late Monday a forecast of 1-2 inches of rain was being upgraded to as much as 4 inches, the report said.
Oromocto Fire Chief Jody Price said she was trying to convince residents who hadn't evacuated they had better be prepared for the consequences.
"The bathtub's full and we're going to dump another bathtub of water in it," she said.
Andy Morton, deputy director of the province's Emergency Measures Organization, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., the river's level was expected to rise by more than three inches by Thursday.
