BEIJING, April 29 (UPI) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao, seeking to boost cooperation with Japan, will travel there May 6-10, the first such visit in a decade, officials said.

The plans were announced Tuesday by the Chinese foreign ministry, Xinhua reported.

Earlier this week, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said the Hu visit would have profound impact on bilateral strategic and reciprocal relations.

"President Hu's trip is a great event in Sino-Japanese relations in the new period," Xi said, adding the trip would promote mutual understanding and substantial cooperation between the two countries.
