Education divides Democratic support

PRINCETON, N.J., April 29 (UPI) -- Education levels split supporters between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in their pursuit of the Democratic U.S. presidential nod, a poll indicates.

Clinton, the senator from New York, leads Obama by 21 points among non-Hispanic white Democratic voters without a college degree, a Gallup poll released Tuesday indicated. The freshman U.S. senator from Illinois leads Clinton by 19 points among white Democratic voters who possess a college degree.

The difference in support by education levels spans all age groups, although it is somewhat stronger among middle-age, white Democrats, the Princeton, N.J., pollster said.

In this group, Clinton's lead among those without a college degree grew to 27 points, Gallup said. Obama's lead among those with a college degree also swelled by nearly 23 points

In the sample of 7,999 non-Hispanic white Democratic voters Gallup interviewed April 1-26, Clinton would defeat Obama 49 percent to 42 percent partly because of her high percentage of support among people with lower education levels. Obama's support among the well-educated isn't strong enough to overcome Clinton's strength in this segment, pollsters said.
