OAS: Haiti needs more home-grown food

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, April 28 (UPI) -- Haiti should bolster its local food production to help the poor cope with rising food prices in the poor Caribbean nation, officials said Monday.

The suggestion to produce more home-grown crops like rice and other staples was made by officials from the Organization of American States during their visit with Haiti's president and other prominent officials, The Bahama Journal reported Monday.

Widespread food riots in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere this month left at least seven people dead.
