Refinery strike prompts panic concerns

EDINBURGH, Scotland, April 26 (UPI) -- British motorists considering buying additional gasoline prior to a strike at a Scottish refinery should avoid such panic-based decisions, an official says.

Business Secretary John Hutton said while some motorists may feel pressured into purchasing large amounts of gasoline ahead of the planned walkout, there was no reason to be concerned and the situation would be resolved quickly, The Times of London reported Saturday.

"There is plenty of petrol and diesel in Scotland to meet demand during this period of time," he said. "But of course there is going to be a challenge if people change the way that they consume fuel."

"There is every reason to believe that we will get through this period sensibly if people continue to buy fuel sensibly, too."

The Daily Telegraph reported the two-day work stoppage at the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland is supposed to go into effect Sunday.

The newspaper said in preparation for the strike, the Forties Pipeline has been temporarily shut down. The pipeline carries an estimated 700,000 barrels of oil a day.
