CHICAGO, April 25 (UPI) -- A tractor-trailer rammed a Chicago transit station during the evening rush hour Friday, killing two women and leaving at least 21 people hurt.
The crash occurred at 5:20 p.m. at the Chinatown Chicago Transit Authority station on the elevated rail line, the Red Line, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Investigators said the truck appeared to have exited the Dan Ryan Freeway just before the crash. It came to a stop underneath the rail line.
Fire Chief Raymond Orozco said four people were trapped on an escalator and had to be cut free. He said 11 of the injured were in serious to critical condition and eight were in fair to serious condition.
Sean Howard, a spokesman for Stroger Hospital, said the 51-year-old truck driver was one of several people being treated there. The driver was expected to be turned over to police custody after refusing additional treatment.
