Canadian prison locked down after brawl

PRINCE ALBERT, Saskatchewan, April 24 (UPI) -- A Canadian prison in the central province of Saskatchewan was in lockdown Thursday after a gang-related brawl injured 15 inmates, officials said.

The medium-security Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert erupted in violence Wednesday night and 15 inmates required medical attention, 11 of them in hospitals, the Canwest News Service said.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, CTV News said.

A statement issued by Correctional Service of Canada said none of the staff was involved or injured during the brawl. It said the lockdown would continue "until further notice."

The facility 100 miles north of Saskatoon houses 520 medium-security and 90 maximum-security inmates, the report said.
