SAN ANGELO , Texas, April 23 (UPI) -- Many of the children taken from a polygamist sect in western Texas will be placed in foster group homes and emergency shelters in San Antonio, officials said.
The San Antonio (Texas) Express-News reported Wednesday that of the 437 children living in emergency shelters in San Angelo after the raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado, Texas, this month, 114 were told to pack their belongings.
The children had a chance to meet with social workers and then boarded 10 buses staffed with Texas Child Protective Services and escorted by ambulances and state troopers, the newspaper said.
A spokesman for the children's attorneys said the first buses left before the lawyers were notified of the court order.
Guy Choate, a San Angelo lawyer, said the attorneys have asked the state to delay moving the other 300 or so children until they can review the list of placements.
