RED OAK , Iowa, April 23 (UPI) -- Investigators in Red Oak, Iowa, said a house blast that seriously injured two women was the result of too many bug defoggers.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office said the explosion, which injured, Jill Kaczor, 23, and Melissa Golden, 25, was caused by the flammable propellant in bug defoggers, KCCI-TV Des Moines, Iowa, reported.
The women were still hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, 12 days after the blast occurred.
Golden's mother, Kim Miller, owns the home where the explosion took place, and Kaczor is an unrelated friend, Red Oak Fire Chief Rick Askey said.
Askey said Miller activated eight low-cost bug bombs to kill spiders before she left the house.
Golden and Kaczor were unaware the odorless defoggers had been activated when they arrived and were injured when a home appliance turned on and set off the explosion, the report said.
"It's like turning a gas valve on when you open the lid," said Kyle Ienn, chief of Ralston's Volunteer Fire Department.
