JERUSALEM, April 23 (UPI) -- Israel has resumed shipments of diesel fuel to Gaza, allowing the only power plant in the region to continue operation, officials said.
Voice of America reported Wednesday that fuel shipments had been intermittent since Palestinian militants attacked the Israeli fuel depot on the Gaza border two weeks ago.
Despite the attack, Israel does not want to make the Palestinian people suffer because of a few, said Israeli spokesman Arieh Mekel.
"Our policy did not change," Mekel said. "We want to continue and provide supplies to Gaza because we are not interested (in), we do not want, a humanitarian crisis."
VOA said Arab media reports indicate that the Islamic militant group Hamas is prepared to accept an
Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.
Under the agreement, Palestinians in Gaza would stop rocket and other attacks against Israel.
In exchange, Israel would halt military action against Gaza and lift a crippling blockade.
