Mohawks barricade Ontario highway

DESERONTO, Ontario, April 21 (UPI) -- About 75 Mohawk protesters blocked a highway along Lake Ontario east of Toronto Monday over a land ownership dispute.

Constable Jackie Perry, of the Ontario Provincial Police told the Ottawa Sun the group 100 miles east of Toronto in Deseronto was in a dispute with a real estate firm in Kingston, Ontario, that had planned to send in crews Monday to clear brush for a development.

The disputed property has been the subject of negotiations between the Canadian government and the Mohawks since 1995, the newspaper said.

Perry told the Canwest News Service several OPP officers were dispatched to the intersection where the barricade after the force was notified Sunday night a group of Mohawks had struck an overnight camp nearby.

She said the officers were only on the scene to monitor the blockade.

"There have been no reports of any violence," Perry said. "They are allowing emergency vehicles through."
