IRVINGTON, N.J., April 20 (UPI) -- An unidentified gunman killed one man and wounded two other people, including a police officer, in a Sunday shooting spree in New Jersey, police say.

Irvington Police Chief Michael Chase said three shootings happened within blocks of one another, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

"All three were shot by the same suspect," Chase said.

Essex County prosecutor's office spokesman Paul Loriquet said with the shooter reportedly fleeing the scene in a sport utility vehicle, authorities were seeking any witnesses to help catch the perpetrator.

"There are teams of detectives out there working this case," Loriquet said. "At this stage, we're trying to get witnesses to help us."

Chase said after the gunman fatally shot a 22-year-old man, he stopped near a police officer and shot him as well.

The Star-Ledger reported the injuries to the police sergeant and the unidentified man involved in the third shooting were not considered life-threatening.
