SUKHUMI , Georgia, April 20 (UPI) -- Military forces in Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia shot down a Georgian reconnaissance aircraft, Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh said Sunday.
RIA Novosti reported the aircraft was an unmanned drone.
"The plane has been shot down. Now efforts are under way to find its fragments," Bagapsh said.
For its part, the Georgian Defense Ministry denied Georgian planes had performed any flights over the territory controlled by Abkhazia, the Russian news agency said.
Since Abkhazia and South Ossetia proclaimed their independence after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia has sought to regain control of the territory, the Russian news agency said.
