WASHINGTON, April 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, paid $157,231 in federal income taxes for 2006 and 2007, his tax papers show.

The Arizona senator had taxable income of $474,104 in those two years that came from his Senate salary, book royalties, Social Security income and his Navy pension, according to papers released by his campaign.

For the two years, McCain paid $157,231 in federal income taxes. During that time, he and his wife, Cindy, donated $340,323 to charity.

McCain and his wife of 27 years have kept their personal finances separate, and have for many years filed separate tax returns. She inherited from her father one of the nation's largest beer distributorships.

The campaign said in a statement Cindy McCain would not be releasing her tax return "in the interest of protecting the privacy of her children."
