SAN ANGELO, Texas, April 19 (UPI) -- Texas child welfare officials praised a decision that left the 416 children of a West Texas polygamist sect in state custody for at least more six weeks.
A judge ruled late Friday the children are at risk of abuse at the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' ranch near Eldorado, Texas.
Marleigh Meisne, a spokeswoman for Texas Child Protective Services, told the Houston Chronicle the agency is pleased with the judge's decision, which followed a two-day hearing involving at least 350 attorneys.
State District Judge Barbara Walther ruled the children would remain in state custody until each child could be granted individual hearings by June 5, the newspaper reported.
"The court has heard that the requirements (of the family code) have been met to each and every element," Walther said.
The judge also ordered each child and adult member of the reclusive sect to undergo DNA testing to determine parentage and family lineage.
