U.N. calls for new Haitian government

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, April 18 (UPI) -- A new government should be chosen in Haiti to avoid yet more violence and protests, said a leading U.N. official.

The head of the United Nations mission in Haiti, Hedi Annabi, said a quick replacement for the prime minister fired last week by the Senate would lessen chances that the protests would erupt anew, Haitian radio reported Thursday.

At least five people were killed last week during protests of rising food costs in the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation.
