DENVER, April 18 (UPI) -- Denver plans to bring in thousands of police officers from other Colorado cities for the Democratic National Convention.
The convention is scheduled for Aug. 25-28. In addition to delegates, journalists, political staffers and consultants and party bigwigs, the gathering is expected to draw thousands of protesters.
At least one Colorado city, Aurora, has said it will send no officers unless Denver pays for liability insurance and workers compensation, the Rocky Mountain News reported. Denver had asked Aurora for 300 officers, about half the smaller city's force.
Katherine Archuleta, an assistant to the Denver mayor, said the city is willing to pick up the tab but is trying to figure out how the expense will be funded. City officials are talking to the U.S. Secret Service.
More distant cities like Colorado Springs have another problem -- who will pay for the living expenses of police officers who must spend the nights in Denver.
