WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama has released his 2007 tax return showing he earned nearly $4.24 million last year.
The release came just one day after the 2007 filing deadline and hours after rival Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign criticized him for failing to release his 1997-1999 returns, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
Obama previously released his returns for 2000 through 2006.
His 2007 return shows Obama paid more than $1.39 million in federal income taxes and contributed $240,370 to charity.
Among Obama's charitable donations was $26,270 to his Chicago church, Trinity United Church of Christ, whose longtime pastor until recently was the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Obama's tax return shows the majority of his 2007 income came from the sale of his books.
Sen. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have filed for an extension for their 2007 taxes, the newspaper said.
