CAIRO, April 16 (UPI) -- Two senior Hamas leaders arrived in Cairo Wednesday, hoping to meet with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the militant Palestinian group said.
CNN reported that although Carter's delegation said no meeting had been confirmed, talks with Hamas officials were "under discussion."
The U.S. network, citing sources, said Mahmoud Zahar and Saeed Seyam left Gaza early Wednesday for Cairo to meet with Carter, who was denied entry into Gaza.
The former president is on the third day of a nine-day "study mission" to the Middle East, as part of his "ongoing effort to support peace, democracy, and human rights in the region," according to the Carter Center Web site.
Carter has said he has "been meeting with Hamas leaders for years."
"It's very important that at least someone meet with Hamas leaders to express their views, to ascertain what flexibilities they have, to try to induce them to stop all attacks against innocent civilians in Israel, and to cooperate with Fatah as a group that unites the Palestinians," he said in an interview on ABC's "This Week" program.
