Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist

LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany, April 16 (UPI) -- Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl announced Tuesday he plans to marry his girlfriend, Maike Richter.
Kohl, 78, and Richter, 43, have been publicly involved since 2005, Deutsche Welle reported. Kohl's wife died in 2001.
A close friend told the newspaper Bild the announcement was not a surprise.
"With this step, he's tackling plans that the two already announced to friends last year," the friend said. "The fact that he's doing it now, shows how optimistic the former chancellor is about his state of health."
Kohl has been hospitalized for weeks after injuring his head in a fall. A spokesman said he is recovering well.
Richter is a government economist.
