CHICAGO, April 16 (UPI) -- Chicago authorities say DNA samples from Wisconsin may help determine the origin of a cougar that police shot and killed on the city's North Side.

A spokeswoman for Cook County animal control said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is providing a blood sample from a cougar tracked in Wisconsin recently, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.

One possible scenario is that the Wisconsin cougar headed south along railway paths that took it through Chicago's northern suburbs and then into the city itself.

Bruce Patterson, curator of mammals at the Field Museum, said the appearance of a cougar is not entirely surprising since the cat's population has surged in the past 40 years.

Patterson said cougars are now roaming in places they haven't been seen in 100 years.

The 150-pound cat killed in Chicago this week was determined to be just under 2-years-old and in good health.

Patterson said that based on its elusive behavior, the courgar was probably wild and not a kept animal.
