SDEROT, Israel, April 15 (UPI) -- Israeli infantry Tuesday battled members of the military wing of Hamas as former U.S. President Jimmy Carter visited the Middle East.
The Israeli forces responded to antitank missiles and mortar shells in central Gaza allegedly fired by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Ynetnews.com said.
The report said the militants suffered several injuries, but no Israeli troops were hurt in the battle.
Former President Carter, meanwhile, visited the battered city of Sderot, which has been the target of repeated rocket attacks from Gaza militants. Carter said he aimed to negotiate a cease-fire and stated the rocket attacks were illegal.
In related news, the Israeli High Court of Justice rejected an appeal from Sderot residents asking for government compensation to protect their homes from rocket attacks. The Court said it has no place in state matters.
