Mexican judge mulls Canadian's detention

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 14 (UPI) -- A Mexican judge in Guadalajara said Monday he will rule within 30 days on whether to try a Canadian woman who has been jailed for two years.

Brenda Martin, 51, faces fraud charges in connection with her former employer who is now in a U.S. jail and who has said in a sworn affidavit she had no link to his Internet investment scam.

During Monday's brief hearing, Martin broke into tears and was escorted back to jail in handcuffs as she said she was feeling sick, the Canwest News Service reported.

A Canadian Broadcasting Corp., correspondent said if the judge decides there isn't enough evidence in a 350-page prosecution file to proceed, he'll declare her innocent and allow her to return home. However, if she is tried and found guilty, it's unclear if Mexico would agree to send her to serve her sentence in a Canadian prison in a prisoner-swap, the CBC said.
