KATHMANDU, Nepal, April 14 (UPI) -- The Maoists opposition group in Nepal may become the largest bloc in the 240-member Nepalese Constituent Assembly, poll results as of Monday showed.

The results compiled and released through Monday show Maoists took 89 seats in the assembly in the April 10 elections, The Press Trust of India said.

The centrist Nepali Congress took 28 seats in the assembly, while the Communist Party of Nepal won 23 seats.

The goal of the elections is to secure a peace plan that would end 10 years of civil war. Maoists guerrillas fought a bitter civil conflict against the Nepalese monarchy, which came to power in a 2005 coup.
