BASRA, Iraq, April 14 (UPI) -- A CBS journalist kidnapped in Basra two months ago has been freed in a raid by Iraqi forces that also netted his kidnappers, CBS confirmed Monday.

The network said veteran freelancer Richard Butler appeared thin but in good condition when he was rescued.

"So many people, both inside CBS news and outside, have been working tirelessly on Richard's behalf," said Sean McManus, president of CBS News, in a statement. "We are deeply grateful to all who have worked so hard to make this day a reality."

Butler, of British nationality, was working as a producer for the CBS show "60 Minutes" when he and his translator were abducted by gunmen from the Sultan Palace Hotel Feb. 10.

The translator was released several weeks ago but Butler remained missing as violence in Basra intensified.

Iraq's second-largest city has seen fierce fighting between rival Shiite militias.
