The fast-tracked bill "is dead unless the speaker schedules a definite vote," Bush said during media availability while meeting with his Cabinet. "It's an unprecedented move ... and not in our country's interest that we stiff an ally like Colombia."
Pelosi, D-Calif., announced last week that the House would postpone consideration of the deal, signed before the expiration of the fast-track law, under which trade agreements cannot be amended, and must be voted on within 90 legislative days. Arguments were raised that the fast-track law cannot supersede House rules.
Bush also touched on the rocky U.S. economy, pointing up the economic stimulus package of incentives for businesses and tax rebates for individuals.
To address "tough economic times" facing the United States, Bush said Congress must make permanent several tax cuts, modernize the Federal Housing Administration and the Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) and Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM) loan programs, and pass the Colombia free-trade agreement.
Bills on "beach monitoring and landscape conservation" are important, he said, "but not nearly as important as FHA modernization and the Colombia free-trade agreement or making the tax cuts permanent."
