NAIROBI, Kenya, April 14 (UPI) -- Kenyan police, reacting to rampaging Mungiki members angered by the death of their imprisoned leader's wife, killed 11 of them, the sect's leaders alleged.
The Mungiki, in response to the death of Maina Njenga's wife, allegedly had blocked roads, torched cars and derailed a train in Nairobi and nine other communities Monday, the Daily Nation reported. Police allegedly attacked the protesters in an effort to quell the rampage, the newspaper said.
Four Mungiki adherents were killed in Nairobi, three in Gatundu Town, one each in Ruiru and Thika and two were lynched in Eldoret, the Daily Nation reported.
Mungiki sect leaders reportedly managed to escape. At a news conference later at Ndunyu in Dagoretti, they demanded Njenga's release and an end to the detention of their members.
The Mungiki is a politico-religious group formed in the 1980s that is banned as a criminal organization in Kenya. Its members advocate a return to African traditions and reject Western culture.
