Accused cannibal Bar-Jonah dead at 51

DEER LODGE, Mont., April 14 (UPI) -- Nathaniel Bar-Jonah, a convicted sexual predator suspected of cannibalism, has died in a Montana prison, prison officials said.

Bar-Jonah, 51, died Sunday of undetermined causes. Bar-Jonah, who had diabetes, was serving a 130-year sentence for kidnapping and sexual assault.

While he was serving time for his 2002 conviction in the assault of a teenage boy, Montana authorities also had said they had enough evidence to charge him with killing 10-year-old Zachary Ramsey in 1996. Bar-Jonah allegedly killed Ramsey, cut him up and served the cooked remains to his unsuspecting neighbors.

Authorities also found a recipe in Bar-Jonah's handwriting calling for human flesh as an ingredient.

But those charges were dropped after Ramsey's mother, Rachel Howard, claimed her son was still alive. His body has never been found.

Bar-Jonah was previously jailed in Massachusetts in 1977 on kidnapping and sexual assault charges. Shortly after being released in 1991, he was charged with another sexual assault but was freed after agreeing to move in with his mother in Montana.

Police officials in Montana said they discovered Bar-Jonah early Sunday, The Boston Globe reported Monday. An autopsy was scheduled.
