Pelosi told CBS's "Face the Nation" that Bush's suggestion that a U.S. troop withdrawal be put on hold to assess the situation in Iraq did not make sense given current circumstances.
"But of course, I don't think the war made sense in the first place in terms of the justification for going, the conduct of the war and the rest," Pelosi said. "But the president has been kicking the can down the road for the last couple of years saying, we'll have a surge, and if it works then we can bring our troops home."
Pelosi also reiterated the stance of most Democratic politicians that a continued drawdown of U.S. troops from Iraq would have a positive effect on the country's stability.
"What would happen is the Iraqi government would take responsibility for its country," she said. "They would get a signal from us that they must now make the political decisions necessary to bring peace and reconciliation to their country."
