Muslim woman wins discrimination case

MALMO, Sweden, April 13 (UPI) -- A Muslim woman reportedly has received $4,203 in damages for being directed to get off a bus in Sweden for wearing a headscarf.

The 20-year-old woman was awarded damages after an ombudsman came to an anti-discrimination agreement with the public transportation company Arriva, the Swedish News Agency TT reported Saturday.

The woman said she was asked to vacate a bus in Malmo after refusing to take off a niqab scarf she wore with her sartorial hijab headdress.

The bus driver said he needed to see the woman's face even though she had a transit pass that did not call for another form of identification, the report said.

"The bus driver has not acted according to Arriva's values. There is no doubt where the fault lies and this is most regrettable. We are happy to pay out the money to make up for it," said Jan Wildau of Arriva.

The bus driver reportedly was fired in light of the incident.
