Carter explains Mideast visit

WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter says he "likely" will meet with leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian group the United States has labeled a terrorist organization.

Carter, speaking on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" from Nepal where he monitored elections, said he had not been advised by the U.S. State Department against talking with Hamas officials, including Khaled Meshaal.

"But I've been in Africa and here in Nepal. They may have. But I've not confirmed our itinerary yet for the Syrian visit, but it's likely that I will be meeting with the Hamas leaders," Carter said -- adding he'll also be meeting with Israeli, Fatah, Syrian and other officials in the region.

"As a matter of fact, I've been meeting with Hamas leaders for years," Carter said, most recently after the 2006 Palestinian elections, which Hamas won.

Carter, noting he is not going as a mediator or negotiator, said he believes "it's very important" that someone meet with Hamas leaders to hear their views, determine any flexibility they have and try to get them to stop attacks on Israel civilians.

He added he's "quite at ease" about his trip despite the urging from many quarters, including fellow Democrats, that he avoid Hamas. He said he tries "to bear the criticism with relative equanimity."
