Ukrainian president sends troops to Iraq

KIEV, Ukraine, April 12 (UPI) -- Ukraine is sending 15 soldiers to fight in Iraq under an ordinance signed by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, the presidential press office says.

Yushchenko said by sending the Ukrainian servicemen to Iraq, his country would not only meet national interests, but help secure international peace and security, ITAR-TASS reported Friday.

Ukraine previously had troops in Iraq between August 2003 and December 2005.

During their deployment in the war-torn Middle Eastern country, 17 Ukraine troops were killed.
