WASHINGTON, April 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine corporal charged with killing a female Marine who had accused him of rape is in custody in Mexico, the FBI said Thursday.
Cesar Laurean is awaiting extradition proceedings, CNN reported.
Laurean has been indicted on charges that include the murder of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, the theft of her ATM card and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He fled to Mexico when Lauterbach's body was found in a barbecue pit in his backyard in North Carolina.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant at the time of her death. Both she and Laurean were stationed at Camp Lejeune.
Laurean left a note with his wife claiming that Lauterbach killed herself by cutting her throat.
Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, who represents the district where Lauterbach's family lives, said Wednesday the Marines did not take her rape accusation seriously enough, the Dayton Daily News reported.
