PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, April 10 (UPI) -- Violent protests that shut down the Haitian capital for three days appeared to subside Thursday, Haitian authorities said.
Businesses reopened and road blocks were removed, Haitian radio reported, though many continued to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis.
The protests, which left five dead and at least 60 people wounded, started last week in southern Haiti over the recent hike in food prices on the poor Caribbean island where three quarters of the population lives on less than $2 a day.
