Gun rule stops high school shooting team

April 9, 2008 at 7:04 PM   |   Comments

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 9 (UPI) -- A North Carolina high school was blocked from a state-sponsored shooting competition due to a district rule banning firearms on school trips, officials said.

The head of the state wildlife commission is questioning the order by the school district affecting East Wake High School.

While the regulations are aimed at preserving safety, Wes Seegars, chairman of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, said, "I can appreciate the fact they may have a policy, but all the government agencies need to remember, they're there to serve the public," The Raleigh News and Observer reported. "There is something lost in a policy that does not serve the needs of the community."

The 30-year-old tournament in question is sponsored by the commission and is aimed at promoting firearms safety and an interest in hunting.

The Observer said gun rules on school campuses in North Carolina are up to the individual districts.
