LAMU, Kenya, April 8 (UPI) -- Violence erupted Tuesday in Kenya after opposition leaders said they were abandoning talks with the government over a power-sharing agreement, witnesses say.

The New York Times reported that witnesses said dozens of protesters took to the streets in Kibera, a slum in the capital city Nairobi.

The newspaper reported protesters lit bonfires, ripped up railroad tracks and threw rocks at police officers.

Rival politicians signed a power-sharing pact Feb. 28, ending weeks of violence after a disputed presidential election in December.

Under the framework hammered out with the help of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga agreed to form a national unity government in which Cabinet positions would be split evenly.
