Reconstruction planned in Madeleine case

LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- Kate and Gerry McCann were asked to return to Portugal for a reconstruction of the night their daughter vanished from their vacation apartment, officials said.

The McCanns remained in Praia da Luz for weeks after Madeleine disappeared. But they returned to England around the time that they were named as "arguidos" or suspects in the case.

Portuguese detectives plan to reconstruct the events of May 3, from early afternoon when Madeleine ate lunch with her brother and sister and her parents to 10 p.m., when she was reported missing, The Times of London reported. The reconstruction is to involve as many of the people as possible who were staying at the resort, including the friends vacationing with the McCanns.

British police are carrying out in-depth interviews of witnesses this month with Portuguese detectives observing, the Times said. Those interviews are to be used in the reconstruction.

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said he could not comment on the police investigation. He said that the couple would welcome a reconstruction, hoping it would generate new tips that might lead to their daughter's whereabouts.
