PRINCETON, N.J., April 8 (UPI) -- Support for the Iraq war falls along U.S. party lines, with Republicans generally favoring it and Democrats opposing it, a Gallup poll indicates.
Republicans reject the idea of a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, 65 percent to 32 percent, the poll indicated. Democrats, meanwhile, overwhelmingly support a timetable -- 81 percent in favor and 15 percent opposed.
Political stripes also showed up when respondents were asked their view on the surge of U.S. troops in Iraq, the Princeton, N.J., polling group said. Most Republicans, 70 percent, said they believe the surge was making the situation in Iraq better; 21 percent of Democrats say it was improving the situation. About half of the responding Democrats, 47 percent, said it is not making much difference, and 31 percent said the surge was making the situation worse.
Independents were about evenly divided in their views as to whether the surge is making the situation better, 37 percent, or not making much difference, 40 percent.
Results are based on telephone interviews with 2,021 adults, conducted Feb. 21-24, 2008. The margin of error for the entire sample is plus or minus 2 percentage points; for each party affiliation 4 percentage points.
