ABC: Iraq troops leaning Democrat?

Published: April 8, 2008 at 8:40 AM

WASHINGTON, April 8 (UPI) -- An informal survey of U.S. troops in Iraq indicates the Democratic presidential candidates' pledges to wind down the war is appealing to them.

ABC News said Tuesday Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton have built up support in the ranks despite the historically conservative nature of the military.

"I am leaning toward Hillary," one Army lieutenant told ABC. "I think that we should have a gradual draw-down."

Other troops said they liked Obama's notion of change in America while others conceded they had been too busy to follow the presidential race.

ABC said while military personnel don't make political endorsements, their views are important because a very heavy turnout of voters in uniform is expected.
