"In my opinion, this is the largest endeavor we've ever been involved with in the state of Texas," Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner told the Houston Chronicle, adding the search of the Eldorado compound appeared to be nearing an end.
Child welfare officials began removing all minors from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' YFZ Ranch last Thursday after allegations arose of sexual abuse of a 16-year-old girl, The Dallas Morning News reported Monday. In addition, 133 women voluntarily joined the children, who were being housed at Fort Concho.
Police had yet to locate the 16-year-old girl said to have mothered a child by 50-year-old Dale Barlow.
Many residents offered food, money and time to care for the evacuated sect members, some of whom have never been outside of the ranch.
"I couldn't be prouder of this town. We've even had to turn away people wanting to wash dishes," Eldorado Mayor John Nikolauk said.
Meisner said a state district judge awarded the state temporary custody, with each child appointed a guardian and attorney, the Chronicle reported.
