ONTARIO, Ore., April 7 (UPI) -- Authorities are investigating what led to a weekend Oregon prison riot during which a guard shot an inmate, corrections officials said.
The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday the guard wounded the inmate during a fight involving about 120 prisoners Sunday morning at Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario.
Prison officials confined inmates to their cells and canceled visiting hours Sunday, the newspaper reported.
Amber Campbell, a prison spokeswoman, said it was the first time an inmate had been shot at the eastern Oregon medium-security prison.
She said investigators had not determined what triggered the fight.
The Oregon State Police was investigating the shooting as were the Malheur County district attorney's office, Malheur County Sheriff's Office and the Ontario Police Department.
