Mother of kidnapped British girl arrested

LONDON, April 7 (UPI) -- The mother of a 9-year-old British girl has been arrested for interfering in the investigation of her daughter's kidnapping.

West Yorkshire police who arrested Karen Matthews would not officially confirm it or discuss what the charge was related to, The Daily Mail reported Monday.

News of the action came shortly after the man being held for abducting her daughter Shannon slashed his wrists in his prison cell.

Michael Donovan, 39, has been in prison since March 14 when police found the missing girl in his flat, less than a mile from her Dewsbury home. Donovan is the uncle of her stepfather, Craig Meehan, 22.

Meehan split up with Karen Matthews since his arrest on charges of possessing child pornography.

Also arrested in the case are Meehan's mother and sister.

Shannon Matthews has been in foster care since she was found nearly a month after she disappeared.

The girl has indicated she does not want to go home.
