Clinton announces breast cancer plan

NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- A plan to find a breast cancer cure, including $300 million annually for research, was unveiled Monday by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., on U.S. national TV.

During an appearance on the daytime talker "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the Democratic presidential candidate said the investments, besides being distributed to several federal medical programs, would also be used to investigate the cause of breast cancer, including environmental, genetic and hereditary links, information posted on her Web site said.

Clinton, whose mother-in-law died of breast cancer, said the plan also would improve access to screenings and treatment by making mammograms more affordable and providing funding for treatment for low-income women.

"I just think we should set a goal of curing breast cancer within the next decade," said Clinton on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "We should make it absolutely totally curable, and I also really want to try to figure out what causes it, because we just don't know why some people are susceptible."
