Sweden's Ica stores recall beef

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 6 (UPI) -- Ica food stores in Sweden has ordered a recall of 16 tons of ground beef after laboratory tests showed high levels of bacteria, the company said.

The Swedish news agency TT reported Sunday the stores were told to stop selling ground beef delivered by the Hilton food group in Vasteras. Only beef with a best-before date of April 8 was affected by the recall.

"We decided to recall a product that showed quality defects according to our quality standards," said Johanna Stiernsted, Ica's quality director.

Five laboratory tests showed elevated bacteria levels. Bacterial levels become higher if the animals are too dirty when brought in for slaughter, the news service reported.

Stiernsted noted that there is "no danger to the consumer. Nobody would get sick from eating it."
