Poll: Economy No. 1 issue for N.C. voters

RALEIGH, N.C., April 6 (UPI) -- The economy, healthcare reform and rising gas prices are issues that North Carolina voters say are most important to them, a poll indicates.

The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer reported Sunday that the poll suggests economic issues trump concerns over the war in Iraq.

The poll, which comes ahead of the state's May 6 primary, found that 47 percent of voters surveyed said the economy was the No. 1 issue facing the nation, while 31 percent said it was the most pressing issue facing the state.

Hoping to woo supporters in the Tar Heel State, Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have touted their plans to help get the national economy back on track.

To make their points, Clinton, D-N.Y., began a TV ad campaign Friday talking about the state's "reeling" economy, while Obama, D-Ill., has been running TV spots on the U.S. job market and the exodus of American jobs overseas, the newspaper said.
