KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 6 (UPI) -- Bob Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, has begun a presidential exploratory committee for a possible run as a Libertarian.

Barr says Libertarians will provide a "real choice" for Americans in this year's election, The Hill reported Saturday. Barr's made his announcement in a speech at the Heartland Libertarian Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

"America today faces a grave moral and leadership crisis, and those of us who care about our country's future can no longer sit on the sidelines and remain neutral," Barr said.

Bar was a member of Congress for eight years and currently belongs to the national committee for the Libertarian Party. In the past, he has openly criticized President George Bush, a Republican, for jumping into the Iraq war too quickly.

"America's voters, when they go into that polling booth on Nov. 4 of this year, they deserve better than the choices that they have faced year after year after year, and that is for going for the lesser of two evils," he said in his speech.
